Selling our Mk1 Golf GTI Print

The time has come to admit that I'm not going to get round to refurbishing our Mk1 Golf GTI, and we need the garage space, so it's here for sale.

She was first registed in May 1983, an Alpine white 1800 GTI. In her life she's had 4 previous owners and covered 120 thousand miles. I took her on in 1999 and my plan was to bring her back to original, so much of the car is still original, including most of the paintwork. I have the orginal owners manual in it's blue folder, and history and receipts since 1999. In 1999 I made the following refurbishments:

  • Removed petrol tanks, cleaned. Renewed most fuel lines in rear of car. Replaced main fuel line forward. Replaced fuel filler neck. Checked for rust behind tank and waxoyled as a precaution.
  • Removed and checked rear axle beam. Renewed anti-roll bar bushes.
  • Renewed rear brake pipes and replaced rear drums and brakes.
  • Replaced front and rear springs and shocks.
  • I then drove her daily until 2003 when she came off the road. During that time she was regularly serviced, had a new exhaust system and a new radiator. I also replaced the brake servo with a bigger passat model, although the brakes are still very "mk1 GTI".

She has just passed her MOT and will be sold taxed, and according to the machanic who MOT'd her is a "tidy example".

She lives in Southampton and if you like to know more, arrange to inspect her or make an offer, e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

    Outside the Car

    Right hand side
Front of the car, originally bought from Martins of Andover, and still with the original number plates.
    Left hand side
    Left hand side
Tailgate, this has some rust around the lower widow rubber and bottom lip. It could be sorted during a respray. I have a set of black stickers for the window surround.
Nearside front quarter and view of LH side.
Offside front quarter and view of RH side.

    Inside

    Tailgate open.
Engine bay. The bonnet is the cleanest I have ever seen. Even in 80's I saw Golf's rusty where the bonnet stiffeners were.
    Wheel well.
    Left hand door.
    Right hand door.

    Engine

Engine bay, battery and altenator are brand new.

    Interior

Passenger side. The interior is in very good condition, with undamaged headlinings and very good seat cover condition.
View of the dash. The computer works and even the annoying little "change up" light.
    Rear seats.
    All important front seat.

    Extras

The car originally came with a set of dealer fit wheels. They are in need of refurbishment and are included in the sale. I also have an unfitted new clutch cable, the old springs and shocks and a few other bits and pieces.

Even before Ventura was officially launched, 2500 passengers had a chance to sample her contemporary style and elegance on a 2 night party cruise to Bruges. Our friends Sarah & Steve, Julie and I would be 4 of those passengers. So how was it...

P&O's latest super liner Ventura arrived at her home port of Southampton today. She was greeted by gloomy leaden skies but at least it had stopped snowing. Town Quay was packed with people trying to get a first glimpse of the new ship.
